The Scheme Scam

What do I know?

Paul Rudd in Role Models November 9, 2008

I just saw Role Models yesterday. I would say it is a perfectly good  film. It entertains, to say the least, but it does fall short at times. I think the plot structure was predictable, but hey nothing wrong with that I suppose as long as the film is amusing. And it is amusing. It’s one of those films that consistently draws laughs from all sides. There’s a little bit of humor for everyone, the crude, absurd, and cynical.

Speaking of cynical, the character Paul Rudd plays is fantastic! Now, there’s a lot of love going around for his portrayal of the down-on-life Danny Donahue. I think it is great, because Rudd never fails to liven up a film. He delivers, whether it’s in Clueless, Wet Hot American Summer, Knocked Up, or even the release-challenged I Could Never be your Woman. I think the reason why Rudd succeeds in carrying this film or stealing scenes in others, is his comic timing and the way he always delivers his lines with subtle panache. Alright, maybe that was a bit contradictory, but if you are a follower of Rudd, you will know what I mean.

This film is wholly his. There wasn’t a line or reaction from him that didn’t follow through, as opposed to his co-star Seann William Scott. Don’t get me wrong, there were some hilarious moments between Scott and his mini black-me, Ronnie ( Bobb’e J. Thompson). But sometimes saying “fuck” over and over again just doesn’t kill after awhile. Maybe that was more of the writer’s fault, on second thought.

I think Rudd has been a supporting player too long. He has the skills, wise-guy charisma, and endearing looks to be the leading man he proved himself to be in this film. Now, if only producers and even awards voters would take notice. This man is long overdue.
